Four Seniors Honored as St. Joe’s Nominees for the Skippy Keefer Award

On the evening of February 7, seniors Shannon Devlin, Jessica Edgar, Mary Kate Doherty, and Lauren Talleur were honored as St. Joe’s nominees for the Skippy Keefer Participation and Sportsmanship Award. Their parents also attended the banquet held at Forest Hills Country Club.

This award is sponsored by the Metro Women’s Athletic Association (MWAA). The following history of the award helps to highlight the reasons that these four athletes were nominated by St. Joe.

"Skippy Keefer has garnered the respect of parents, students, and educators and has been a positive force in athletics in St. Louis County for well over a quarter of a century. Skippy spent much of her career as the Athletic Director at John Burroughs School where she helped to build a strong athletic program for 24 years. While she spent much of her career there, her impact on athletics reaches well beyond Burroughs.

In 1988, Skippy was one of the founders of the Metro Women’s Athletic Association. This league was formed to promote athletic participation and strong sportsmanship values within private independent schools. Skippy recognized that it was not enough for young people to play well; they must also be people of good character. She embodied this belief and demanded that Burroughs students and coaches also "do the right thing". It is her philosophy of excellence through participation and character that has been the cornerstone of MWAA.

Upon Skippy’s retirement, an anonymous donor wanted to honor her by contributing $1,000.00 yearly to a senior female athlete within the MWAA league who exemplifies the qualities of athletic participation and excellence in sportsmanship. The Skippy Keefer Participation and Sportsmanship celebration was established by MWAA to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sport Day and to acknowledge young women from each MWAA school who have been nominated for this award."

The criteria for nominees are as follows:
• Attends a MWAA school
• Senior Student
• Participated in a minimum of 2 sports each year in high school
• Demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship both on and off the field or court
• Highly respected and admired by the school community
• Nominated by the school Athletic Director
• Letters of Recommendation from 2 or more Coaches and or School Official

Congratulations, Shannon, Jessica, Mary Kate, and Lauren, on receiving this well-deserved nomination!
