Sports Extras: Gracie Soccer Pep Rally

Stars of Gracie Inspire Students at Pep Rally

As part of a pep rally for the SJA vs. IWA soccer game, St. Joe was excited to welcome two celebrity guests, Andrew Shue and Carly Schroeder, stars of the upcoming movie, Gracie.

Quoting from the Gracie web site, "Set in 1978, Gracie is an inspirational film about a teenage girl who overcomes the loss of her brother and fights the odds to achieve her dream of playing competitive soccer at a time when girls’ soccer did not exist." The movie is based on true events from the lives of the Shue family, Andrew and his sister/co-star, Academy Award®-nominated actress Elisabeth Shue. (You may remember her from such films as Karate Kid, Adventures in Babysitting, Cocktail, among others.) The film is directed by Academy Award®-winning director Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth) who has a St. Louis background.

Andrew Shue, Melrose Place star and former professional soccer player with the LA Galaxy, got a little choked up as shared his sister’s story with the students.

Carly Schroeder, of Lizzie McGuire fame, and the teenage lead actress of the movie, said of her 12-week training experience in soccer, "I had no clue how hard it was – it is such an intense sport." She also reminded students that "Once you put your heart into it, you can do anything."

After the assembly, both stars graciously took time to sign autographs and pose for photos.

The movie is set to be released in theaters, nation–wide, on June 1.
