Grade System
GPA Calculation
How to calculate your GPA (pdf, 39.11KB)
The SJA GPA weighting system gives +'s and –'s a specific weight. This weighting system is tiered to .33 steps creating a graduated climb. The weighting system gives grading delineations equitably without creating a gap between students that do not accurately reflect their performance.
For example, two students score in the B range in a class. With the current grading system a student who receives B- achieves the same GPA weight as someone with a B+ in the class (a 3.0). This GPA weighting system insures that the better performance of the B+ student is rewarded (3.33 for a B+ and 2.67 for the B-) without creating an insurmountable gap between the B- and B+ student. The program encourages competition and improvement while reinforcing the difference between B+ and B- work.
Grading Scale
- A+: 99-100 = 4.33
- A: 95-98 = 4.00
- A-: 93-94 = 3.67
- B+: 91-92 = 3.33
- B: 87-90 = 3.00
- B-: 85-86 = 2.67
- C+: 83-84 = 2.33
- C: 79-82 = 2.00
- C-: 77-78 = 1.67
- D+: 75-76 = 1.33
- D: 72-74 = 1.00
- D-: 70-71 = 0.67
- F: 69- = 0.00
- I Incomplete
- E Excused
- N None
Honors courses are weighted by adding 0.5 grade point, i.e., A+=4.83, A=4.50, A-=4.17, B+ =3.83, etc.
Report cards are issued on a semester basis.
Exam grades count as 20% of the semester average.
